2013 Independence Day

Details at the end on how to win this postcard in the mail!
Hope you all had a nice 4th of July!
We spent it as a family attending our various small town celebrations together.
Cliff pushed the kids in the double stroller as I walked along beside
to see the parade of floats and local teams, organizations, camps & businesses that were represented.
Sea Mart employees pushed grocery carts loaded down with produce
and they gave us a banana for each of the babies!

We saw our official "Parade Friends," Paul & Lindsay.
We happen to stand in the same area for all the parades and
we are getting to know them better each time!
We all laughed as we walked away and said, "We'll see you on Alaska Day!"
But they did us one better and dropped off some home smoked salmon & home preserved strawberry rhubarb jam the next week!
God is so good to provide sweet people in our lives to show us His love!

Allen Marine gave out full sized candy bars that we almost got into the fray for.
The local farmers market passed out stickers that proclaimed
"Alaska Grown!"
and I promptly adhered it to one of our baby Nalgene bottles.

The theme of the parade this year was the US Coast Guard which was pretty awesome!
We are fortunate to have a Coast Guard base here in town,
they bring us many good things, most especially, dear friends!
We spent most of the day strolling with our neighbors, Jim & Carrie who are in the USCG.
they also happen to have a matching orange double stroller for their 2 kids!
Due to budget cuts, this was the first year I can
remember that the big Jayhawk helicopters didn't do a fly over during the parade.
Kind of humorous in its own right.
After the parade, which was about 30 minutes long - perfect for our attention spans these days,
we attended the annual fireman's water fight!
It was great!
All the children lined up as close as they could get to the ropes, hoping to get wet.
The local firemen challenged the USCG to the water fight
they had lines like a tug of war but sprayed their hoses at a big barrel in the
middle of the closed off section of Lincoln street, which is our main drag.
The cutest part was that they surprised all of us at the beginning by pumping bubbles
out of the hoses and spraying them all into the crowd.
It was fun!
I don't remember which team won the challenge.
We closed out the day eating homemade tamales from our friend, Lupita,
who was running a Tamale food stand
smoothies from the SDA church booth
and Fry Bread sold by the Sheetka Kwaan Native Dancers.

I'm so glad you had an exciting 4th and that you took in so many activities. Your blog is certainly capturing the events and will be a great reread later on. In several years the twins will enjoy reading about the 4th when they were small. The postcard is a great idea! I'm with The J Crew....you can hand deliver it!!

woohoo! Raking in the comments on this one! As Adrian already said, we would love a postcard! I JUST cleared off the fridge and in doing so took down their birth announcement. :) It would be nice to have a new pic to replace it with. Just today when Cora was wearing Ruby's popsicle dress I was asking David if he knew who it belonged to before Cora and we talked about all of you guys. love you! Kelly
